Africans have been waiting for decades for the mains electricity which the rich world takes for granted. Sub-Saharan Africa’s 910m people consume less electricity each year than the 4.8m people of Alabama. Many more who are on the grid suffer brown-outs and dangerous surges in current. But a solar revolution is afoot. In 2009 just 1% of sub-Saharan Africans used solar lighting. Now it is nearly 5% or 11m people. Renewable energy solutions, especially solar mini-grids can be used to provide electricity to the rural areas in Africa. Such schemes can be regulated as micro integrated utilities. In Kenya where GIZ has been supporting rural electrification efforts through the implementation of mini-grids, the improvement of social, economic and environmental values in the electrified villages is immediately visible. Technical skills are however essential to address the operational challenges that solar village mini-grids require. Talek Power pilot project paved the way in the enhancement of rural electrification in the region. The project demonstrated that solar hybrid mini-grids, when properly designed are also commercially viable.
It looks like the time has finally come for residents across Africa to start using their most abundant natural power source. By 2018, a large solar power plant in the Tunisian part of the Sahara desert may start sending power to energy-hungry Western Europe. in July 2014, Kenyan renewable energy firm SteamaCo set up a solar microgrid in Entasopia a remote area on the southern savannah. Some 70 people in Entasopia are now benefiting from SteamaCo's solar microgrid project. According to SteamaCo's website, the company operates 23 power and water microgrids in East Africa and Nepal. Tapping into Kenya's abundance of sunshine, the company has installed high-capacity solar panels at power hubs, where energy is stored in high-voltage batteries. Each hub can harvest up to 5.6 kilowatts of power, enough to supply electricity to nearly 100 households and businesses, depending on their usage and distance from the hub. This documentary is about the work of Energy For Opportunity (EFO) (www.energyforopportunity.org) in Sierra Leone, where it implements small-scale solar projects in rural communities. The specific project in the documentary, was funded by AusAID through the Australian High Commission in Ghana, and involved the installation of solar electricity at four sites: a school, a health clinic, a community centre and a hospital in the villages of Kamakwie and Kamalo. Students from the local Government Technical Institute (GTI) and National Power Authority (NPA) were involved in this project as a part of the courses they take at their respect institutes, which EFO helps to facilitate. Scatec Solar has undertaken three solar PV projects in South Africa. The projects are situated in the semi-arid Karoo region covering South Africa’s central interior, which has among the world’s highest solar irradiance levels. The 75MW Kalkbult plant is based on solar panels mounted at a fixed angle to the sun, and the 75MW Dreunberg and 40MW Linde plants have been constructed with horizontal single axis solar tracker systems, enabling them to track the sun and optimize electricity generation. This allows them to generate about 20% more electricity.
